I'm Dutch, can get married to whichever sex I choose, and so married none, since I have no interest in marriage whatsoever. But I support those who do want to get married, including threesome marriages, group marriages, gay and straight marriages and pretty much anything else you can think of that doesn't involve coercion, duress, underage people or animals.

I'm also a total sucker for those small, domestic 'old married couple' moments in my favorite series. Yesterday I was speeding through some old Sentinel tapes (in order to figure out what I actually have on tape - [livejournal.com profile] halimede, do you have any requests?), and came across the following moment, after a friend of Blair's has been found murdered:

Jim enters the darkened loft, where Blair is seated cross-legged in front of five fat candles and an incense burner. Sitar-like music plays in the background. Jim doesn't look surprised, just sits down on the couch close to Blair. Blair turns the music off, and Jim talks about a new development in the murder case. The news upsets Blair, who says 'I have to get out of here'. Jim offers to take Blair out to dinner, 'my treat', but Blair says he has to be alone, walks to the door, and adds 'Will you get the candles for me?'

The next shot is of Jim, asleep on the couch in front of a dead TV screen.

I love that. That line about the candles kills me. And Jim waiting up for Blair. melts

Uhm, I didn't, really. I know so little about the series, all I can say is 'slash me up'. This sounds good, though. ;)

Oh, and maybe the one with the fountain, if you have it? I've heard so much about it...

I actually have no idea whether I have the fountain one or not, but if I do, I'll certainly bring it. It's a hell of an episode.

The thing with the Sentinel is that a lot of the actual plots (and bear in mind that I've seen maybe a third of the eps) leave me cold. In the episode I quoted just now, I couldn't care less about finding out who the killer was, and I would've fast forwarded through the car chase (blegh) except that there was a charming bit where Jim rammed his truck against the criminal's car and Blair yelled "Hey! Why d'you have to do that on my side of the car?" Heh.

I really only watch it for the character moments. That's different from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, where I don't mind the huge buckets of cheese because it's done so charmingly, and I totally get into the swordfights. Mmmm. Swordfights.

Yeah, I've heard about what makes Sentinel worthwhile, and what *doesn't*.

And swordfights are good.

Is there anything I should start digging out? At the moment I have sync at the top of the pile, but I'm willing to dig up less sparkly items. ;)

Maybe your favorite Kodocha ep or something? But I wouldn't sweat it. We'll see what we're in the mood for.

And swordfights are good.

Ahhh. Validation. :-)
It just occurred to me that there's a show on the other end of my spectrum: Highlander, which I watched only for the sword fights.

Ahhh. The 'falling asleep on the couch waiting up for Blair' bit. One of my favorite scenes. :-)

Yeah. Total Jim sweetness. Plus the mental picture of Jim carefully blowing out all the candles.

Also the whole boxing discussion between Blair and Jim in that same episode, where Jim calls Blair 'Tiger' and says that he can easily picture Blair in flowing silk robes and boxer shorts. (Hello, Jim, is this appropriate office talk? I think not...)

Oh man. I'd forgotten that line.

(frantically rummages through dvds to find this ep to watch again)

Who needs a plot when you've got "character" scenes like these? :-)

Ooo, you have Sentinel DVDs! Do they come with cool extras such as commentaries, or the famous bloopers?

Boy do I wish they were official dvds with all the goodies! No such luck -- still waiting for TPTB to get off the dime and provide those for us fans.

Nope, they're dvd's I burned myself. I had to transfer my tapes to digital files anyway in order to create song vids on the computer, so I took the final step to make them into DVDs. It was nice to be able to put the tapes into storage.

Gotcha. That must've been a hell of a job.

And what a damn shame. I hope they do bring out official DVDs.

Me too. A perverse part of me was hoping to invoke Murphy -- if I go to all that trouble, surely *that's* when official DVDs will appear. ;-)
