Yuletide nominations have started, and are open until next Tuesday, yay! (This isn't the part where you sign up to write stories yet; it's the part where you nominate fandoms you want to offer/write in the challenge, to cut down on the Ginormous Fandom List of Doom.)
I have nominated Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, The Real Ghostbusters, Venture Brothers,
marthawells's Ile-Rien novels, Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar novels, and, um, something else - I think it was Donald Westlake's Dortmunder novels. But I'm sure about the first five, so you can take those off your list! *g*
These aren't necessarily all the fandoms I will offer to write, or ask for stories in, but they're definitely on the short list, and since we only get six nominations, I'm hoping other people will nominate the slightly bigger fandoms I love, things like Sherlock Holmes and Invisible Man and Vorkosigan and Wimsey and so on.
I'm getting ridiculously excited about Yuletide again; I'm usually away for a walking holiday around Christmas, and if I'm home I don't celebrate it except by eating big dinners, so the Yuletide challenge is more of a holiday ritual for me than anything I'm used to around that time. (I do celebrate Sinterklaas, which is December 5th, and is all about sweet things, strangely wrapped gifts and writing poems for people, so Yuletide is a nice followup in every way.)
It's not just the writing to deadline and the promise of a story on the 25th; it's also the whole secrecy thing, the worrying about what to offer and what to ask for, and how much detail is too much, and then the assignment comes and with that comes panicking and reassuring and secret pact making and in some cases, the writing of fake stories and lying to one's best friends until one is blue in the face. So Much Fun.
Are you doing Yuletide this year? *pokes flist*

Date: 2007-09-21 08:42 am (UTC)I have to say, the lying is one of the best parts. (And the freaking out - "OMG OMG, shut UP, she could come in any moment!") I do hope we get to do that again this year.

Date: 2007-09-21 08:41 am (UTC)I am ridunkulously pumped for Yuletide this year. I'm already all jittery just from the nominations excitement!

Last year six people asked for it, and twenty-nine people offered. Maybe we can even that out a bit this year.

Date: 2007-09-21 08:53 am (UTC)Oh, I'm already so torn. I know I want to offer for it, but so many fandoms to choose from for requesting! Last year was so much easier when I'd only begun dipping my toes into small fandoms, whereas now, it's like this huge delicious feast, hehe.

Date: 2007-09-21 01:19 pm (UTC)And it's going to be so weird this year. Last year, I got two of the stories I've been dreaming of since I first signed up for Yuletide. I mean, okay, technically elyn got one of them, but since it was so perfectly what I wanted, it felt like an extra gift. And the story I got was absolutely perfectly what I wanted. So now there are two blank spaces on my request list where those fandoms used to be, and it's just a whole new world.
I may be going slightly crazy from the freedom - like, I really don't think anyone is going to sign up to write a story based on a song for me - but it's so much fun.
Though I am kind of bummed that the last year didn't yield any snarky movie that I could sign up to write. (Last year gave me Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I got to write as a pinch hit and it was so much fun. The year before gave me Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which I got assigned. I've spent the whole year waiting patiently for this year's dialog-intensive and fun movie to come out, and it didn't. Or maybe I just couldn't find it. WOE.)

Date: 2007-09-21 01:39 pm (UTC)Hee, yes, exactly; the anxiety and the OMGNOES is all part of it. Or so I tell myself every year. I'm glad you're joining in again, too!

Oh, that is lovely, yay you for getting the perfect gift! And I agree, Dorinda's story for elyn was absolutely amazing. That was a fandom I would not have known to ask for, but I completely accidentally watched The Sting before Xmas, and read a book about the art of cons a month or so earlier - and then Yuletide arrived, and wow. Blew me away.
I have no snarky movies for you, alas, as I think I've only seen one movie the entire year and that was Stardust, which was pretty light on snark. But did you see
