Screencaps up at my site for the Hercules: the Legendary Journeys episodes Twilight, Top God and Reunions. These are the three episodes dealing with Alcmene's death and Zeus' manipulative attempt to turn Hercules into a god and establish him on Olympus.

About half these episodes are flashbacks, introducing young Iolaus, Jason and Hercules (Ian Bohen, the guy who actually looks and acts like a young Hercules, to my mind, not his later incarnation Ryan Gosling), and the Young Hercules storyline doesn't always mesh with the adult one, but there are some powerful moments in the adult half.

My favorite bits are pretty obvious - this would be first on the list:

That intense hug just before Hercules goes off to Olympus with Zeus. 'My friend,' he says to Jason, and clasps arms with him, but 'My brother,' he says to Iolaus, and wraps his arms around him. And Iolaus tries so desperately not to show how miserable he is. Wah.

At the end of 'Reunions', things are better and Hercules is back and there are no good screencaps for that, because it's all in the dialogue and the little embarrassed looks when Hercules says to Iolaus, "I realized how much my family means to me...and you're it," and Iolaus actually runs off because he doesn't want Hercules to see him lose it. Aw.

I'm also very fond of the silly bits in 'Reunions' where Zeus is mortal and turns into the drunk old lech we all knew him to be anyway. Roy Dotrice isn't a particularly good kingly Zeus, but he's a fantastic happy drunken mortal Zeus, if you ask me. And afterwards he's all "Pipe down, kid, the old man's hung."

Oh yeah. Ares shows up too.

And then this happened. (I put this one in just for [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer. *eg*

And this is just because Iolaus looks so happy, walking away from his mum's house after finally making up with her, and because I keep staring at it. *melts*

I agree - I liked Ian Bohen as YH much better than Ryan Gossling.

He matches Kevin Sorbo more physically and the personality he gave Young Herc is more in keeping with Kevin Sorbo's performance.

In the YH episodes I have seen, RG had a great rapport with the other two guys - I just had a lot of trouble thinking of him as the young Hercules, because of his looks and his cocky, self-satisfied demeanor. With Ian Bohen, I found it instantly believable. He looks like Herc, and there's a sort of earnest sweetness about him that I love. You can see the beginning of the man inside the boy.

(You can also see Apollo coming on to him in these eps, and naive Herc not quite getting his drift, but that's another story. "Polish my board", indeed.)

That moment when Herc comes back and Iolaus is about to lose it might be my favorite moment in the whole series. I've shown that to several people to prove that their love is not something I have projected, but is actually there on screen. God, I love that moment.

I also adore Roy Dotrice as Zeus, I think I just really like him as an actor, so bias showing.

I love your shots, thanks for bring back the memories.

Hey, thanks! And yeah, I do love that moment. The one I usually pick to show people (heh, I do that too) is the famous barn scene in Maze of the Minotaur, but this would be a good contender.

I also adore Roy Dotrice as Zeus, I think I just really like him as an actor, so bias showing.

*nod* I really liked his mortal Zeus here, he's much more sympathetic than he is as a god, and he does the comedy really well too.

On the whole, I think I liked Anthony Quinn best as Zeus, even if his performance seemed to be phoned in now and then, because he really gave me that feeling that this was no ordinary old man.
