Hooray! elke_tanzer has found a way to turn off the LJ 'nudge feature', which gets my vote as the stupidest feature of the year. Follow her instructions and you can no longer be 'nudged':

make sure you are logged in to LJ, then go to the admin console at http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/ and put the following in the box, then click execute.

set disable_nudge 1
