Woohoo! My Hercules DVDs have arrived. Thank you, my friendly Ebay guy.
And I'm very pleased with them. The picture is crystal clear (fellow European fans: they work just fine on a region-free DVD player and a PAL TV).
I've only watched 'Maze of the Minotaur' (fast forward, fast forward, PAUSE!) and 'Pride Comes Before A Brawl' so far. 'Pride' is one of the episodes with audio/video commentary, and just from this one ep I'm convinced that the commentary alone is worth the price of the set. The audio commentary runs the length of the episode, the video commentary is excerpted from that, so you can see them react to their on-screen selves.
Michael Hurst, of course, comes up with the best lines and some hilarious impressions, but Kevin Sorbo has lots of interesting stuff to add too. I admit I'm biased here (hey, I'm an Iolaus fan, what can I say) but I laughed my ass off at Michael's comments. Random sampling:
"This is the first episode where the character of Iolaus really came into its own, more than just an "I love you Hercules" kind of guy". (!)
"Lydia is demonstrating the special Wonderbra effects here."
(of the lake monster in this ep) "Ooh, look! A Muppet! And they were saying 'Make it look alive, make it look like it's moving', I nearly drowned..."
"Hmph. Old hunter's trick. Yeah, we just happened to have all this rope, and twine, and...(dissolves into giggles)"
(of Herc and Iolaus after the fight on the bridge) "Look at them, bickering - really, they're just like an old married couple..."
And then there was Sorbo's "this is Iolaus' PMS episode" and his wonderfully deadpan delivery of "Michael Hurst. Hero. Lover. Fighter. Big Stud Guy." at the close of the episode. Even though Hurst and Sorbo are doing the comments in separate rooms, they're still having each other on.
But there's lots of other stuff - reminiscences about various actors, stunt guys, locations, mishaps, you name it. I'm going to have so much fun watching the rest of these.
