And yeah, I think it would've been better with the first YH too, not to spoil anyone's squee, but. He just *fit*.
Iolaus' medaillons: well, as far as I know there's only one that has history, and that's the green jade one he wears everywhere in the series. In Love Takes A Holiday we learn that Iolaus' dad Skouros wandered away from his village as a toddler, wearing the amulet, just before Hades froze that village in time. So when Iolaus shows up wearing the amulet, his grandmother recognizes it. Evidently he inherited it from his dad somewhere after YH.
Then in the sixth season, when Iolaus is killed, his amulet is broken in two, and Hercules wears the remaining half around his neck for a while (which I find a very powerful image) until he gives it to Nebula.
