I've put up a ton of screencaps for the third season Hercules: the Legendary Journeys episode Prince Hercules.

This is the ep where Hercules loses his memory and nearly swears himself to Hera, while Iolaus spends the entire episode purple. (Everybody: "Why are you purple?" Iolaus, exasperated: "Because I like it.")

It's also the episode I'm rewriting for the Real Legendary Journeys project.

I'm very proud of that last one, because there's only a split second where Hercules is lying in bed alone before the wipe to another scene (you can see the beginning of the wipe on the right). Someone make me a nice H/I manip with that, pleeeeeaaase? :Puss-in-Boots eyes:

I'm not allowed to talk about what I'm going to change in Prince Hercules for the rewrite, but suggestions for improving the episode and beefing up Iolaus' part in the story (which are the elements required by the RLJ) are very welcome.

My main beef with the RLJ episodes so far is that I feel they're often not being told as stories - the POV shifts all over the place or it's camera-eye, and what's on screen in the episode is what the reader gets to see. Plus there are very few original scenes being added. Which...really isn't the point of the exercise, if you ask me. In a story, you have the huge advantage of being able to show someone's emotions, thoughts, flashbacks, reactions, ideas - all without having to rely on actors, or lighting, or expository dialogue. And there are no limits on special effects, scenery, costumes, or bad guys. (A quote from [livejournal.com profile] ltlj which I have by heart: "It's not as if you have to pay them scale." *g*)

I also feel that some of the rewrites lean too heavily on the 'making right what once went wrong' aspect, which can turn into Apology!Fic ("Iolaus, I am sorry for not wanting you to go with me on my dangerous mission even though you just woke up from a coma, and I don't appreciate you enough, and did I mention that I'm sorry?") and Sappy!Fic ("See? Nice guy X died and that was sad, so we brought him back to life and never mind that this wrecks both the story and continuity").

Of course, now I have to put my money where my mouth is.

After Yuletide...

Oooh, that is a nice grab! Good timing, you!

And the only thing I can think of would be the missing scene right after image 107 when Herc and Iolaus get ~rid~ of said purple, but I don't think it would work very well for an RLJ thang. :->

LOL!

That's a great idea, though. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Oh, nice caps! They're nummy.

I've pretty much stopped reading the RLJ because of the reasons you list. I absolutely can't stand Apology!Fic, especially as all of it requires Hercules to apologize for things no one in their right mind would expect an apology for. If some of these people had written the original episodes, 10% of it would be story and 90% would be Hercules apologizing to Iolaus for everything that happed in the first 10%.

And I'm really looking forward to your version of "Prince Hercules."

In that case, you MUST read [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords's The Apology (http://www.mediafans.org/rachael/highlander/apology.htm). Trust me. :->

Thanks, that's just the ticket!

"SORRY I CALLED YOU METHOS. STOP. WILL TRY TO REMEMBER NOT TO USE THAT NAME. STOP. I KNOW THEY WILL KILL YOU IF THEY FIND YOU. STOP. YOURS, DUNCAN.

That one he made a singing telegram, just in case Methos was mad about the other one."

But see, Iolaus is so dependent on Hercules that his little world just crumbles when Hercules says Harsh Things to him. Ya know?

Mary, running away fast

I'm hoping for some original episodes for the next few seasons. It was the hardest part of rewriting the episodes as you pointed out when you beta'd my Mummy Dearest. I'm having a real problem with the second one I'm rewriting. I keep doing what you said, writing simply what the episode showed. I've pretty much stopped looking at the episode (though I might review the fight scenes). Maybe after I write it down, I can go back in and do the things that would make it more interesting.

I hope to get to do an original for season 4. Then I can have free reign. That, or go back to my own stories for more personal satisfaction.

Hmm, I have no idea what the original storyline is going to be. I wonder.

They have themes for them, so it will have a general focus.
