Running is fun. Who knew?

On Thursday, I bought running shoes. Today, for the first time since high school, I ran. And walked, and ran again. And it felt good, running on the grass in bright sunny morning. For the next five Saturdays, I'll be running and training with this group, a bunch of total beginners like me plus an experienced trainer, and on Mondays and Wednesdays I'll run by myself or with my SO. Six weeks from now, we'll go to a real athletics court (as the trainer said, "In the last group some people had never been to one of those", and I thought: "Me!") and we'll run 3 kilometers. 3 kilometers! That's the distance I bike to work!

The group was a joy - middleaged women and young guys and old people, who all banded together and told each other they were doing OK and no, their new running tights didn't look silly. There was one tall lanky bashful teenage Surinam boy who ran like a gazelle, and who blushed as the trainer told him that he had talent. And my new shoes fit beautifully. (If you are thinking of taking up running too, buy good shoes. Go to the specialty running stores where they'll happily take two hours to find you the right pair. It's worth it.)

I came home feeling pleasantly warm and tired and pleased as punch with myself for trying another New Scary Thing. And my SO had made breakfast, squeezed fresh orange juice, bought strawberries and fresh bread, made Keemun tea, all the things we usually do together on Saturday morning. What a great start to the day.

You only have a 3 KM commute? Mine is 43 KM each way! waaaaaaah!!

But congrats on the run! I'm trying to get my ass dressed and to Curves this morning, but I think it's not going to happen. Like it hasn't for the past month. *sigh*

Bet you're not doing it by bike, then. *g*
But yeah, one of the big advantages of my current job is that it's nearby.

And go to Curves! Go go go! It's always so tough to go train again when you haven't done it for a while, but you will feel great afterwards, I promise.

I'll pass on the running, but does your SO have an older brother? :)

I took the kidlet to the local Rennaissance Fair. It was opening day and finally we had a hot muggy day. Sigh. I lasted 5 1/2 hours.
At least I got my walking in, and the kid got her walking stick, some marbles, a little leather pouch, and the traditional turkey leg to eat. I also got a to listen to Tartania a little bit (bagpipes), and Tippler's Way (3 'Irish' tenors). Did I mention we walked? A lot...

Barbara, hot, tired, sticky...and hitting the showers.

Sounds like a good time - and 5 1/2 hours sounds like a lot to me, too. I have to grin at the idea of buying 'traditional' turkey at a Renaissance Fair.

Alas, my SO has no brothers whatsoever. But he may have an identical A/U twin - then again, there's no telling what that one might be like...

Well, traditional for us to buy it. They didn't have turkeys in Europe

oh, well done!

that's fantastic!

I can walk for hours, but running just... hurts. I'm so impressed with your determination. From what I hear a little, often, is the way to work up to this stuff. If you ever feel yourself wavering, just post it - you know we'll be there to give you a gentle push :)

congratulations!

Thank you for those kind words! And yes, a gentle push will undoubtedly come in handy on occasion. Or even a big shove. *g*

Mary (today's my second training day! Off for a wee run-walk-run in half an hour or so.)
