For this relief much thanks

Sent off my original fic for the Dutch SF&F contest. It was a pain in the butt, this one, mostly because I started it far too late and then ran out of time to do the work required to turn it into a decent story. Note to self: next time, do not get derailed halfway through your first draft fantasy story and write a 15000 word fanfic instead.

[livejournal.com profile] halimede entered two terrific stories, and now we get to wait until...November, I think, to hear the results. What's great about this competition is that apart from the 500 euro (say $600) main prize, each and every story gets a jury report from each and every member of the jury, so that in effect you get six or so critiques from Dutch SF&F editors and pros.

My PC is still broken - it's either the motherboard or the battery, or whatever the thing is called - but I am pretty sure it's still under warranty, and will be even more sure after I dig out the paperwork tonight, so I hope to have my dear Epiktistes back in working order shortly. I want to make screencaps and play around with vids and stuff, now that I don't have the deadline hanging over my head.

(The laptop I'm working on right now is called Ziggy. Do any of your computers have names?)

[identity profile] derryderrydown.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they have names. Though, admittedly, that's largely to identify them on the network. My desktop is Zen, because it's all sleek and swishy. My laptop is called Orac, because it's cranky and opinionated and full of flashy lights. And my mum's is Slave because it can do most things you ask of it but just does them very slowly.

I don't know what we'll do if we go beyond three computers on the network. I'll have to change my naming scheme, or start using Blake's 7 ships as well as computers.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Zen is a lovely name for a computer, period.

And I've seen very little Blake's 7, but I remember seeing the snarky computer and thinking how boring the Star Trek computers were in comparison.

You could branch out into other SF computers, I suppose: Multivac, Hal, Holly...

My work computer doesn't, sadly, but the computer at home is Pigwidgeon. *g* [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh named it. My old computer had no name, and it's beyond ancient for these days. So when I got the new top-of-the-line Dell in November, I was so excited I kept going "Whee!!!" in chat, and the virtual equivalent of running around the chat room, so she said something like, "I keep picturing Ron's owl, so pleased with himself and zooming around in circles. You should name the computer Pigwidgeon!" ZOOOOOM!!! so fast!

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw! Pigwidgeon! So cute.

My work computer doesn't have a name, either; I don't think of it affectionately, it's got too many restrictions for that.

[identity profile] falzalot.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Where I work, almost all the computers have names associated with fish or the ocean. There's reef, pike, guppy, aquaman, beachtowel, bikinibottom, etc.

Mine, alas, came prenamed. It's goldfish. Ack. Talk about boring. I usually say "mutant goldfish" just so I can live with myself. :->

BTW - LOVE the icon!!! I know it's the wrong scene, but I can just picture Ilea saying, "Mummy, what's Daddy doing to unkle eye-o-las?" :->

Heh, where my SO works, all the computers are named after various Belgian beers.
Would be fun to have a computer named 'guppy' if you were a Sentinel fan, though...

Aw, thanks! I know what you mean. That's one of the defining quotes of the fandom, as far as I'm concerned. :-)

Mary, ogling her 'barn' icon

[identity profile] falzalot.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy ... when you put those icons all together like that, they do kinda tell a story, don't they? :->

[identity profile] halimede.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I didn't, yet. I spent the day tinkering with the second story and a) I'm still not happy and b) I started printing too late and missed opening hours at the post office. But! I shall take it there personally tomorrow, and if the mail cooperates it should still get there on time.

I was really grumpy about entering the second story when it doesn't feel done enough yet (I feel all naked with my ideas floating around so ill-explained), but then I realised I couldn't have written the ending of the first story quite like I have it now if I hadn't taken my brain to a different place for the second story. Also? The next story is going to have sex in it again because it just works *so* much better for me. :)

And *also* also, I think we should get to work on the next thing. Yes.

Ah. That's good. Otherwise I'd have to get medieval on your ass. I mean, if I sent in a half-baked story, so should you! *eg*
No, I didn't mean that. I really seriously think you should send it in, for all the reasons I mentioned yesterday.
(Also, I have sorta promised to be on the jury next year, so you couldn't submit it then anyway...)

And *also* also, I think we should get to work on the next thing. Yes.

Hee! I hear you. (For me, fanfic first, but I've got other stuff to get back to as well.)

MEEP! That's serious incentive to wish hard that the postal services do their job right!!!

And we should write, damnit! Okay, also I should catch up with the rest of my life, but I want to write more stories and complete them too. {me nods firmly}

[identity profile] barbaraa.livejournal.com 2004-06-28 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My computer has a name...I guess.
It's usually You Piece of Shit.
:)

Good luck on the pc and the stories.
And what's wrong with stopping to write a 15000 word fanfic? lol

Barbara

It's usually You Piece of Shit.

Hee! I hope your PC troubles vanish (and mine, too. And everybody's.)

I'm going to try and write more fanfic this week, now that I'm actually allowed to. *g*

[identity profile] barbaraa.livejournal.com 2004-06-29 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to work on my research for the Troy story. I have ideas in my head already. Which gods to actually involve, how much involvement, how long do I want the war to be (not as long as Homer/history said, but longer than the movie version), rough scenes between characters, what characters I actually want to use...the list goes on.

And then there is the GA virtual season 3...I've put in my list of stories I am willing to write. Those have a Christmas deadline to be met. I can foresee my watching an ep or two ad nausem to get the dialogue I plan to use...

Barbara, daunted but unbowed...

[identity profile] barbaraa.livejournal.com 2004-06-29 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, this is only the 3rd time I've tried to post...damn LJ!
lol
I've got my list of stories I want to write into the GA for season 3...we have till Christmas to get them done.

Then I have to work on my Troy story...have to refind the link I was using for research. At least I have ideas in my head. Nee to write them down...what gods to use, how active they'll be in the conflict, which characters to make come alive in my version, what scenes I want, how long the conflict will be in my version...no 10-12 years, but not just a week or so either! lol
And how long did it take to cross from Corinth to Troy in those days on those types of ships? Wonder where I'd find that....

Barbara, daunted, but determined...

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2004-06-29 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I see you! *g*

And you know I want to read your Troy story, oh yes. And I volunteer to beta it, if you want.

And how long did it take to cross from Corinth to Troy in those days on those types of ships?

I have no idea, but maybe someone else reading this has a good reference? You might be able to find it in a history of travel or shipping, or in military histories of Ancient Greece.

Looking forward to the season 3 of the Real Legendary Journeys too. You do know that Whoosh has transcripts of all those episodes (http://www.whoosh.org/epguide/nolonger.html#htlj1), right? So you don't absolutely need to rewatch them ad nauseam. Unless you want to. :-)

So I'm told. That will make it easier! I'll still watch them though for scene description, changes, etc.

You are written down as beta for Troy. Now I need to move my ass and start putting pen to paper for lists/outlines.

and now that I'm at home, I can see that yes, our computers both have names, but I'm pretty sure that was for the network. My roommate's is Sarellian. Mine is highlander, as is the C drive. The D, E and F drives are Duncan, mEthos and Fitz. Hey - it's much easier to find stuff when they have names! :->

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2004-06-29 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, drive names! That's a good idea, actually. All I have are harddisk names - Data I and Data II. How boring can you get? I should've named the second one Lore, but I'd be afraid that it would be unstable...
