This is not my idea of a good time
So. Day off. Massive storm outside, and my PC is doing extremely scary things - rebooting continuously, for one. It is now in the corner, unplugged, wearing a dunce's cap and scowling. Hah.
Think it's a hardware/driver problem and not a virus, since I have Windows Update and the Norton at their most paranoid settings, but who knows. I am not a hardware geek, I leave that to the SO - who is a king among men for suggesting I needed to download the story in progress to a USB stick, which was pretty much the only possible way to get at it since the server I backed it up on is also down. I managed to do that, with split second timing in between sudden reboots, and am now working on the laptop.
But if my beloved half-year-old computer is fried, I shall weep. And also kick myself for not burning all my H:tLJ vid source and Premiere project files to CD. Moral: Back Your Stuff UP. Do it NOW.

If your resident geek can't figure it out, call us, we've had similar problems recently-ish. Turned out not to be the motherboard/physical harddisk this time, but a corrupt file allocation table on the hard drive, and it was fixable. All data recovered. And the good news about PC's is that they're hardly ever completely fried. The time before the last time it was 'just' the CPU which was physically fried.

BTW, email is also down due to (unrelated?) server problems, just FYI - but then I'm still a couple of thousand words short, so no need to send anything on this end yet. :-)

SO is working on the PC while I work on the story. Hope to finish first draft tonight if all goes well.

Eek, glad you were able to back up your story.
Oh, and I sent you an email letting you know where the large barn scans are.
Feeling nostalgic
Well - it was a problem with the ACDC-thingie, but the repair-man insisted to remove a stain from the motherboard and killed our pc in the process.
I hope your problems aren't as severe as they now appear. Good luck with resolving them. And for your story of course.
Re: Feeling nostalgic
We're still testing the hardware, I just hope it's something easily replaceable. Preferably not the motherboard...
Thanks for the good wishes,
Mary

Oh, and big favor. I lost the pictures you sent me when my pc crashed. The ones your SO took on your vacation. Think you might be able to resend them to me after you are one more up and running? Then I'll wisely back them up to CD and print them out for references for my paintings.
Much thanks and a great deal of sympathy on that computer problem!
