677 words for the Dutch fiction contest thingy today. They all suck, though, except 'd*mstering' which I stole from
halimede. Must keep reminding self that first drafts are allowed to be sucky.
Time to get distracted. I failed the fanfiction.net meme I gacked from
marinarusalka, but it was amusing anyway: the idea is to look up your name in fanfic story summaries for Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, in a Mary Sue scavenger hunt. My real name has no Mary Sues on offer (yay for being a furriner) and my LJ name nets me hundreds of stories with summaries like these:
you've had mary sues, anti mary sues, now anti anti mary sues!
BTW, this is a choice fic for Pippin fans! And this is NOT a Mary Sue. It's about a female hobbit who comes along on the journey to destroy the ring. I guess it's based on the movie, but I HAVE READ THE BOOKS. I guess there is romance in it. And some humo (sic)
Pippin is surprised to find a female hobbit in Lothlorien -- Not a Mary Sue -- Rated C for Cuddling
YES CHAPTER TWO IS UP! AND IT INCLUDES MARY DRESSED AS A FAIRY AND LEGOLAS IN A THONG. DON'T FORGET TO REVIEW
I think this is my favorite, though:
Mary is kidnapped by the Elves. Who will regret it more? The elves or her?
(Oh, the Elves, definitely. Especially once they've heard me sing.)
More distraction:
ltlj has a post about the movies Michael Hurst's appeared in (ranging from execrable to quite good, apparently) and
flambeau has asked about location: where does your favorite pairing usually get it on, and what's your favorite location? Which locations are overused? I think H:tLJ suffers a bit less from this than other fandoms because many of the characters don't have a fixed abode; gods can do whatever they want wherever they want to do it, and Hercules & Iolaus are always on the move. Still, I think they spend many more nights in taverns in fanfic than they do in the series, or is that me?

I'll have to remember to put some humo in my next story.

It's not you. I don't think we ever saw them spend the night in a tavern in the show. If they did, I can't recall it. It was usually a barn or a clearing out in the woods, where they slept in the dirt, and very occasionally on a blanket or a piece of fur. We do see them eating at taverns at least a few times, though.
When I first started reading Herc fanfic and kept finding the really bad slash stories, it always tickled me how they tended to go on about which flowers the guys smelled like, and how they never acknowledged the primitive level of personal hygiene that was obviously going on.

You shouldn't taunt me like this you know. I'm supposed to be writing... ;)
Okay, one is earlier, and one is later but like I said, I'm supposed to be writing. Oh, and the warrior thing is no excuse either. You know what the Spartans did just before they did their thing at Thermopilae, right? They fixed their hair. No, that is not a joke, that's a verifiable historical fact. Interesting sociological trivia associated with the hair thing too, but I really have to stop cat-vacuuming now. :)
Linky goodness:

Also: Yay groovy Dutch words! (Your rl friends don't read this lj, though, do they? Cuz I don't thing many other people'll be using this word much.)

Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understood your reply. I was talking about the show, where the characters had a deliberately grungy look, and not actual ancient Greece. If you're interested in links on hyigene in the ancient world I can send you a bunch, and the names of some good source books. I have an old Dover book on the world history of underwear which is really cool. :)

Links would be cool, bibliography is probably overkill at this point, since I'm not actively doing anything with ancient Greece. I think I've seen the Dover book, but I can't remember much about it. But I tend to be nitpicky enough about historical stuff that I tend to go for books about one specific time and/or place as they tend to be the most precise.

Cool. Send me your email address whenever you get a chance (I'm at webadmin @ ltljverse .com) and I'll send you what I've got.

I do too. I tend to have to research specific historical places for my work, for usually a couple of years at a time, until I'm sick of the sight of it. (Example: Paris sewers in the 19th century, though fortunately it was a very small part of the project and I found such good sources I only had to spend a couple of weeks reading up on it.) Then I have to research somewhere else for a couple of years and I forget what I've learned about the others. :) It's more fun when I have a project where I can do multiple places in multiple time periods, which is what I'm doing now.

It's probably very telling that my first reaction to that is 'how cool!'. *g* I can imagine that the variety must be nice. :)

Reading that section did make someone claustrophobic, so I considered that a big success. :)

That was my first reaction, too.
Mary, who loves all things underground

I so need to live near your library. :->

The Dover books really cover some interesting subjects, I wish I could find more of them.

Ooh, good point. Have fixed word in attack of rampant paranoia. *g*
It is a lovely word, and I'm abusing it by only using it as a street name...
I like the links about various forms of toothpaste, have bookmarked #2. Thanks!

Offhand, the only time I can recall is in MotM, just after the moment in my icon, where they've beaten up half the tavern. (I should really do an animated version that includes the landlord's reaction to Hercules' ordering two rooms...)
Another item to add to the canon/fanon list.

Oh, good grief. If they just came from the palace baths and someone got overenthusiastic with the scented bath oil, maybe. Otherwise...what's wrong with nice clean sweat?
Mary, looking distracted

Oh, that's right! I forgot about that bit in Maze.

LOL
Barbara, who is so desparate for her computer, that she's sitting in a library catching up on mail and LJ...and it's not been 24 hours since the PC went south.
Sheesh!

That would be fun. *g* ("Sheesh, it's not like you're a bouquet of roses yourself, you know...")
Hope your PC recovers!

And 150 bucks.

And darn, I can't access Goldapple to get my Basilisk story. Mutters. Hates computers....
