Nirvana in Fire, cont'd

Ahh I'm enjoying Nirvana in Fire a lot! It's so beautiful and the various relationships are so complex and engaging. There is a bit in episode 10 that's probably not at all important, but that I kept rewatching to see what I'd missed:

That second tiny dagger is flying straight at MCS, right? And Liu Fei is leaping to try and catch it, but he can't quite make it there fast enough. And then we cut to MCS, smiling faintly, and nothing else happens. No thunk of the dagger hitting the wood, no shots of it falling to the ground, no fast clip of him plucking it out of the air.

When the show just kept going, I seriously thought that we were going to get a moment--maybe a good while later, even--where MCS pulls his giant fur-collared cloak aside and we see that the tiny dagger did land in his chest, he just chose to ignore it until he could take care of it privately. (Or until Prince Jing could discover it and yell about it, then bandage him? :koff:)

Of course that is just my inveterate h/c habit, and with our hero already sick and coughing up blood, well. I love the cold and the snow and the braziers--we see the characters' breath plume in the air, so it must have been actually cold where they were filming, too, and it makes me glad they at least get to wear those layers and furs.

Speaking of furs, the costumes are all so beautiful--I was a bit sad at first that our hero never gets to wear any of the fancy embroidered cloaks and armored jackets, just those bulky layered bathrobes, but I can see that there's a point to it. He stands out as an ascetic or a monk, almost, separate from the court, and that very simplicity makes him striking. And I loved those textured indigo robes he wore in the "confession to Nihuang in the snow" scene, sigh.

I'm so happy that Nihuang found out his secret identity this soon! Just like in Guardian, I really appreciate that this plot thread didn't drag on for the full length of the show, or even half. It makes for much more interesting developments if she gets to conspire with him, and maybe try to protect his secret on her own dime, too. And of course now that I know he has such history with Prince Jing, I can't wait to see how that reveal happens...

Ahh, have fun, that's such a great and satisfying show! Delivers on the drama and the h/c both, yes. And the costumes are incredibly gorgeous, I spent at least half my time watching just gaping at them. The fabrics are so beautiful and rich and they're shot to amazing effect. And yes, MCS's ascetic aesthetic provides a very notable contrast, but it's lovely when he dresses up...
