More about Michael Hurst in "Here To Stay"

I posted earlier about Michael Hurst on NZ television in the documentary "Here To Stay", where Kiwis talk about their ethnic roots. Hurst's episode is the third in the series and should be shown on April 9; I hope TVNZ put it up online, too.

There's an interview with Michael Hurst up on the TVNZ website now, where he talks about what it was like coming to New Zealand as a working class lad from Lancashire, and what it was like doing various 'British things' for the documentary, like punting and driving a Morris Minor.

My favorite bit is about his first day at school:

Sure, I still had to fit in. I was small, with a broad Lancashire accent (something that took me but six months to lose!), so I told everyone that I was a leprechaun. That went down well, but the pretence lasted only until the afternoon of my first day when a girl asked the teacher if it was true. Cover blown.

See, I knew someone else would appreciate that quote. :-)

And this interview is just text, but I see that they've put up a bunch of clips from the first ep (which doesn't feature Hurst) on the site, so hopefully they'll do the same for his episode, and I'll post about it if they do.
