Kevin Smith interview blues
I was reading a great Kevin Smith interview about his work on Xena and Hercules, where he talked about wearing his Ares costume for the last time - how strange that felt, how hard it was 'saying goodbye to this guy'. And then there's this jokey bit that hit me right where it hurts:
Damn. If only.
[For the non-Herc/Xena fans on my friends list who might not have heard about this: Kevin Smith died on February 16th 2002 at 39, due to injuries from a fall on the set of his latest movie.]
CM: Well, you know how television works. In fifteen yeurs everyone will be feeling nostalgic, and they'll be making Xena: The Telemovie.
KS:Xena: The Telemovie. Yeah, yeah. [Laughter] And I'll be like three hundred fifty pounds, trying to squeeze back into my Ares costume, trying to heave my manbreasts back into it! [Laughter] Ares is bald, he's on a cane - people want to see that!
Damn. If only.

That was such a shock.

Sometimes the universe takes a shift to one side when it shouldn't.

I agree. I love the way he played Ares - with both a dangerously seductive edge and a glint in his eye that said "I'm not taking this at all seriously". It could so easily have turned into just another 'Arrr I'm a bad guy, look at me chew up the scenery' part.
Just a damn shame.
