The writers didn't leave much room for improvement in episodes like these.

Sounds like an argument I once had with the GM of one of the RPGs I was playing some years back:
"Never base your RPG on a good book: You'll either be afraid to mar the players 'reality' of the 'world' in question, or you'll have to take severe liberties with your plot to accommodate the players."

She would always base her plots on crappy novelletes with'potential, which worked out fine.

Buffy however so too rich in detail to easily write/play something involving the main charaters.

having said that... There's allways the exception that proves the rule ridiculous.
In my case that's the Free Fudge Buffy RPG...
