I think it's that by the time you finish a story you've been working on really hard, especially anything that's long and complicated, you've lost the ability to evaluate it.

Ahh that makes so much sense - you can see all the history, and the editor can't, they see what's actually there. I hope your editor is good at pointing out just how great what's there really is!
