H:tLJ dvds: Best Buy bonus disc review

I've only watched two episodes so far (The Apple and Cast A Giant Shadow and none of the commentaries, but I did check out the goodies on the Best Buy bonus disc.

On the Best Buy disc there's an instantly forgettable interview with Bob Tapert (Iphicles fans: do not watch this. I'm not kidding), a before-and-after-SFX reel of the fight with the Harryhausen-esque skeletons and twenty or so costume sketches (including those for a guy named 'Iolus' and an early Xena), but the reason you can't do without this disc is the blooper reel.

Words fail me. It goes on for what feels like twenty minutes, which is a hell of a long time when you consider that some of the bloopers are only a couple of seconds long, and I was helpless with laughter for much of that time. Loved it. Lots of bloopers from all seasons, many of them featuring Kevin Sorbo and quite a few with Michael Hurst or the both of them together.

There are relatively few 'oops, I forgot my line' or 'whoops, my spear broke in two' type bloopers - most of them really aren't bloopers at all but the actors having a laugh. As [livejournal.com profile] ltlj pointed out, Michael Hurst has more energy than any one man should possess and Kevin Sorbo is happy to dance a little soft shoe in the middle of a fight scene, apparently forgetting that he's still carrying another actor on his shoulders. They're maniacs, but what fun they must have had.

Highlights:

  • Sorbo trying to rip his yellow vest apart for bandages in one of those classic hero moments, and failing...and failing again...and finally giving up with the vest still stuck in his teeth, making jokes about flossing. That needs to go in a story somewhere.
  • Michael Hurst whacking Sorbo in the back of the head with his sword during the Xena fight. (You can distinctly hear Hurst's appalled, 'Oh, Christ'.) I really wanted to see that, ghoul that I am.
  • Hurst and Sorbo taking the mickey out of the Egyptian Queen (? this is a sixth season ep, so I haven't seen it) by vogueing like drag queens while repeating her line "A queen's work is never done" and adding "Ooo, I'm so busy". And then, in a later shot, they start dancing a cancan behind her back. I will be making caps of this.
  • Sorbo's mock-angry "Get the camera away from him! That is enough screentime for this man!" as Hurst woos the audience and baby Evander.
  • Kevin Sorbo's naked buns. Hey, they're nice buns, what can I say?
  • Autolycus repeatedly kicking his boot across the room instead of up into his hands, getting more exasperated each time.
  • Sorbo and Hurst ganging up on a defenseless guard.
  • Hurst kicking Goth in the face. For real. Oh, my.
  • Sorbo making crazy faces behind Hurst's back during the scene where they talk to Jason about Alcmene's illness and turning a supremely innocent face to Hurst when he looks round.
