Dear Yuletide writer:

Hi! Yay, you share at least one of these wonderful fandoms with me, and I’m so glad you chose it. Have an excellent Yuletide! And please do not worry: optional details are optional, and any prompts are only there in case you’d like to have something to kickstart your story.

Things I love, in general

I love happy endings, especially after tense, difficult situations. Some of my favorite story tropes are hurt/comfort, A sacrificing himself for B, and "A thinks B is dead, but he's not really", but I also love light, funny stories, plot, snark, missing scenes, understated longing, ordinary domestic days in the life of the characters, epistolary stories, and stories written from an outsider’s point of view.

Things I love about these particular fandoms:

Invisible Man, Darien Fawkes and Bobby Hobbes )

Elfquest, Cutter and Skywise )

Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, Hercules and Iolaus )

Mask of Apollo - Mary Renault, Nikeratos and Thettalos )

According to TVshows on DVD, Universal is re-releasing the Hercules: the Legendary Journeys dvds, but possibly without the five TV movies that started the series or any of the commentaries and other extras of the original release; season 1 is going to be three single-sided discs, which really sounds like...not a lot.

The original Anchor Bay dvd releases are now out of print, but easy to find on Ebay, and it seems like those would still be a better deal, if you don't mind that the sets are bulkier than the new slim-line ones.

ETA: Universal is also re-releasing the Xena: Warrior Princes dvds. Not a lot of detail yet, but this set also has less discs than the previous Anchor Bay release. I still regret not picking up all the Xena season sets when they were on a 2-for1 sale at DeepDiscountDVD...

I've only dipped a toe in the sea of Yuletide stories, but what little I've read has been wonderful. I hope to post some recommendations later - probably after the reveal, so I can rec the other stories in the fandom I wrote in without fear of giving myself away.

(The usual offer applies - if you guess the story I wrote before the reveal, I'll write you a drabble of your choice, provided it's in a fandom I know, or something longer if the inspiration strikes. You only have today to guess, though - reveal's tomorrow! *g*)

Meanwhile, I want to point to the two Yuletide stories I received. I got very lucky again this year, and I thank both my authors so much! I can't wait to find out who you are.

The Labours of Iolaus.
Rated PG-13.
Fandom: Hercules: the Legendary Journeys
Summary: The problem, Iolaus thought, was that Hercules just didn't know how to say no.

Cheerful, funny Hercules/Iolaus, yay! This made me grin a lot and go "aw", and there's some very inventive use of the 'official' Hercules myths, with just the kind of twist the show would have used.

Rated G.
Fandom: Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes, crossover.
Summary: A glimpse of a possible encounter near the end of one career and the start of another.

I'm going to be a little vague here, but this is a crossover between Sherlock Holmes and another detective series of my heart, and it's wonderful. I love all these characters so much, and I adore the way they are written here. I may as well admit that this story made me cry, but it is not depressing, and completely Merry-safe. :-)

Via [ profile] cycnus39: at the end of January 2008, there's going to be an Ebay auction for a complete Ares costume from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys.

As the HtLJ and Xena fans on my flist know, Ares was played by the talented and gorgeous Kevin Smith - he died in early 2002, and we still miss him.

This auction is being held by Sue Smith, Kevin's wife, to raise a memorial for him:
Since his passing, money has been donated or raised over the years for the Kevin Smith Trust for his three sons. However, his wife Sue would like to mark his 45th birthday next year in a special way by erecting a wonderful memorial stone. To facilitate this, she is providing Kevin's spectacular leather Ares costume (see pictures below), along with her signed letter of authenticity, to be auctioned on eBay at the end of January 2008 (check back for exact dates).
More details on Jennifer Ward-Lealand's website.

With a whole bunch of exceedingly nosy relatives grouped about me, I've still managed to manoeuver myself and my laptop so that none of them can see the screen or appear suddenly and heartstoppingly at my shoulder -- which means that I have managed to read all my Yuletide stories and am now trying out the posting-without-interference thing. Fingers crossed.

Yes, I did say all my Yuletide stories. I'm completely verklempt, here, and it was very hard to keep my composure and not go eeee! out loud a lot and startle said relatives. I got four stories, which. I. seriously. FOUR STORIES, in three different fandoms, and they're all wonderful. They seriously are, and they complement each other beautifully, and I loved reading all of them. O Yuletide fairy goddess type people, you rock, and I am so grateful and gleeful and thrilled, I can't tell you. I scatter rose petals at your feet, and thank you so very much!

It is so lovely to get presents you can share. Here are my presents, come read them!

First, my official story: The First Time is the Hardest, set in Martha Wells' Fall of Ile-Rien universe. (Ilias/Giliead, NC-17.) Gil and Ilias go hunt their first wizard, and have a very tough time of it, and I loved the adventure and suspense and the deep trust between them. The way this story makes connections with other events in the books and the worldbuilding feels exactly right. I read this lovely long & plotty story in three bites, with long walks in the dunes in between, and that was just perfect - I spent the whole walk worrying about Gil and Ilias and Gil's father Ranior succumbing to the evil wizard and scarybad things happening to them, ohnoes!* Thank you so much, my wonderful author, I adored it.

Then there was A Good Day, Real Ghostbusters (PG).
Peter Venkman deals with a difficult ghost, alone. Again, I adored this - short, vivid, crammed full of action, a fiercely determined Peter Venkman and some understated but warm hurt/comfort, which are things that go together like tea and chocolate, yum. The only complaint I have is that I wish to read more of this story, moremoremore! *is greedy*

Then, Festival Day, also set in Martha Wells' Fall of Ile-Rien books (PG-13 for swearing).
Fabulous first line: "In the months since Tremaine has arrived in Cineth, she hadn't wanted to kill herself once, but it was certainly looking like an attractive option today." and the rest is just as good. Syprian celebrations, with Tremaine in her new position as head of the household, and it's just warm and fun and delicious, with a perfectly written Tremaine. I love it.

And then there is I Friend You, You Friend Him, Hercules: the Legendary Journeys (PG).
Iolaus and Hercules deal with one of Salmoneus' most insidious inventions ever.This. I. *flails* This is sheer demented genius, much like Salmoneus himself. It made me laugh like a drain, and the scary thing is that I can totally see this happening on the show. Just fantastic, and you should really read this even if you don't know from Hercules, because I guarantee it will crack you up.

*hugs all of Yuletide*  Happy holidays!

*(They do not get eaten by the sharks at this time.)

[ profile] thefourthvine has posted a hilarious Fandoms I Have Loved overview of Stargate SG-1, with links to recs and resources, and one of them was [ profile] niamaea's SG-1 photo essays about Jack and Daniel's outfits throughout the seasons. I've just spent way, way too much time reading every single one of them and laughing my head off. (The first one is here: Everybody's Crazy 'Bout A Sharp-Dressed Man, pt 1.)

Of course, being the kind of fan I am, I immediately wanted to do a similar fashion post for Hercules: the Legendary Journeys. There is just one problem with this, and that's the horrendous failure on the part of TPTB to come up with more costumes for Hercules and Iolaus. Xena and Gabrielle got a costume makeover every other episode, including fetching samurai and hindu idol outfits, whereas Herc and Iolaus spent six seasons tooling around in the same clothes, and yes, I am still ridiculously bitter about this.

However, from the essays it's clear that HtLJ is much better at nudity than SG-1, where you apparently only see nudity if someone's just descended from being ascended, or whatever the hell you call that. And HtLJ did have its fair share of entertaining outfits, especially when you factor in the evil twins, lookalikes, demonic possession and amnesia. Also, and most importantly, looking at HtLJ screencaps just never fails to cheer me up, especially from any episode that has the Widow Twanky in it.

So, here we go! How to Dress for Success in New Greeceland, part 1, featuring young Hercules and Iolaus and whoever else we meet on the way.

Image heavy, of course. Not to mention leather pants heavy. )

To be continued in >How to Dress for Success in New Greeceland, part 2, or: Why Does Iolaus Not Wear Pants?
marycrawford: 13 hour clock icon (iolaus king)
This weekend will be the Weekend of Taxes - not just this year's, I might actually ask for an extension on those so I can get the ones from the past three years done. (Yeah, just don't ask. Being an adult is hard sometimes.) I've got all the preliminary work done, I just need to fill out the electronic forms and cross my fingers a lot.

Also, my brain is slightly frazzled and full of scary-beautiful-omgscaryhelp images left by mainlining all 12 episodes of Dexter in about a week - I'm pretty sure this is all [ profile] therienne's fault, as usual, and holy wow. What a show. I recommend the books too, though I think the show improves on the plotting by about 200% - I just really like the voice of the books, and the audacity of a story told in first-person present POV, a serial killer POV, yet, in a way that works. And, um, both the show and the books leave me rooting for the serial killer, yes. (But he only kills bad guys! And he tries so hard, in his own completely fucked-up way! Snf.)

So to unfrazzle my brain, I watched a favorite Hercules episode, King For A Day.

I love how much this episode is a 'make Iolaus fans happy' bonanza. There's Iolaus' doppelgänger Orestes providing twice the usual amount of eyecandy, there's the silky robes and the sleeping with nothing on, there's the waking up with nothing on and then wrestling a potential assassin, there is the swordfight with the sneering villain who uses foils, historical accuracy be damned, yay swordfight! -- damn. I need screencaps here.

Wrestling )

Closeup of hotness )

Swordfight! )

Swordfights are hard on mortals )

I love how Iolaus does a doubletake when he picks up the foil, a 'wtf is this?' and then moments later he's dueling the bad guy in true Elizabethan style. *g*

And then there's the aborted romance with Niobe. I like Niobe, though not quite as much as I adore Nebula or Dirce or Lydia - Iolaus does have amazing girlfriends - but most of all, I admit, I like the doomed part of their romance, especially in the ending of King For A Day, because. Snf. Look!

*snf* )

Leaving ohnoes )

My screencaps are bit crap here, but that red-eyed look to Iolaus is real. He has to go and leave his Niobe behind, woe. Not to mention his henchmen and his kingdom. Well, not really his, but you know he could have taken it over in a heartbeat, and Hector and Linus wouldn't have minded in the least.

And after Orestes asks Iolaus if there's nothing they can do to make him stay, he says, "No. I've got a friend waiting at the Delphi crossroads."

That friend being Hercules, of course, and aw. Also, I grinned a lot at this because when I named the Delphi Archive, I couldn't remember if they'd ever used the location in the series or not. Now, at least, I know that the Delphi crossroads is where Hercules waited for Iolaus to rescue him from a lovesick maiden.

Rescue meee )

More screencaps for King For A Day here.

(Hey, if you're not doing taxes this weekend, please go upload some of your Hercules: the Legendary Journeys fanfic at the Delphi Archive? Pleease?)
marycrawford: 13 hour clock icon (woot!)
I've been a bit absent from LJ lately, but that's because I was working on a Neat Fannish Project, and now I'm ready to open it officially, yay!

Delphi, the Hercules: the Legendary Journeys Fan Fiction Archive

What is it?
Delphi is an archive for stories about characters from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys and its spinoff series Young Hercules. And I do mean all characters: Hercules, Iolaus, Jason, Discord, Strife, Salmoneus, Nebula, the Sovereign, Ares...whoever you want to write about.

Gen, het, and slash are equally welcome. The archive does not accept anything involving underage sex or real people. Beyond that, everything else is fair game.

Why a new archive?
This archive isn't meant to replace any other archive, Zeus forbid; it's intended to be a base archive for the entire Hercules fandom, where all people's favorite stories can be found in one place, and a way for authors who don't have their own space on the web to reach more readers. And it's an automated archive, which means authors can upload their stories themselves.

Please upload your stories!
I'm hoping, requesting, and flat out begging everybody in the fandom to upload their stories. All you need is your stories, saved as plain text files; the upload form and the FAQ have the details, but it should be a pretty easy process, and you can preview your story to see if everything looks okay. You don't need to register or join or anything like that.

If you have any questions, please send email to delphi at squidge dot org, or comment below.

I'm crossposting this to [ profile] herc_iolaus and [ profile] hxyh_announce, and I'm going to look around for more communities which might be interested in this - I don't want to spam anybody, but I do want to let fans of various HtLJ characters and pairings know that the archive exists. Feel free to post this announcement elsewhere, or suggest lists/communities!

Huge galumphing great thanks to [ profile] astolat for writing the Automated Archive software, to [ profile] aka_arduinna for letting me steal all her own archive's nifty features and about 90% of her FAQ, and to Walter for his generosity in hosting the archive on Squidge. ♥

This was going to be a WIP Amnesty post, because this story has been on my harddrive for two years while I poked at it and pestered other people with it. (Clearly, this is why I shouldn't write short PWPs; they just take too long.) But it has an ending and everything, and I like this version well enough to post it without amnesty. *g*

Thanks to everyone who looked at it and said helpful things, and especially to [ profile] elynross for the final beta and for convincing me to post it.

DeepDiscountDVD has a buy-one-get-one-free sale until the 21st. (Thanks to [ profile] elynross for the tip!)

The sale includes all season box sets of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, which means you can buy two seasons of HtLJ for 18 dollars total.

They've also got all the Xena and Highlander box sets; those are a bit pricier, but 30 dollars for two seasons is still a pretty good deal.

Shipping is free for USians, for the rest of us it's still fairly cheap. Note: I've ordered from DDD before and found their service reliable, but their shipping erratic: one box set never arrived, and they sent me a free replacement that appeared to have traveled via Sweden.

To brighten up a gloomy Monday, I've put one of my favorite clips from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys up on SendSpace to download for anyone who wants. It's an .avi file, about 17 Mb, and better quality than you'll find on YouTube, but it'll expire eventually, so don't wait too long. *g*

When I say that it's the barn scene from Maze of the Minotaur, experienced viewers of H:tLJ will need nothing more (though I should perhaps add that it's *both* of the barn scenes, and I edited out the flashback inbetween.) I put this up for people who haven't seen much or any Hercules, and who might like to see one of the slashiest bits in the show.

I can't tell you how much I adore this, and I remember how hard it was to cut out bits of it for my first Iolaus vid. (And how [ profile] elynross could not believe Iolaus' flirty looks over the winecup were being directed at Hercules. Hee.)

ETA: I think we broke SendThisFile in our enthusiasm, and I've re-uploaded the file to SendSpace, which is an annoying site but has unlimited downloads. The 'MotMexcerptjoined.avi' link is the one you want. (Yes, I seriously suck at naming files. Ahem.)

[ profile] ltlj put up a link to her Hercules/Iolaus slash manifesto, and I shall too, because it's fabulous.

Over at Dogged Blog, the first con report I've seen about Michael Hurst and his wife Jennifer Lealand at the Xena con in Burbank last weekend. (This was a Creation Con, i.e. 'pay $70 to have your picture taken with Renee O'Connor'. Gleep.)

This is a great, nicely detailed con report (the rest of the report starts here and she also has an entry about Xena in concert) and this bit cracked me up:
Asked about the origin of "Frock Day," which is a NZ theater tradition rooted, he says, in boredom. The women get all dolled up and the men wear dresses and makeup, just in the morning. At lunch you change, and no one talks about it, other than to say "nice frock."
And Hurst says he'll appear as the Widow Twanky next year, as long as she gets an invitation. Hee.

ETA: Here's another con report with pictures from [ profile] katbaggins, including details about the cabaret in which Michael and Jennifer appeared. Also check out her gorgeous pic-taken-with-Hurst and her hand-knitted I ♥ Twanky pin, people. Woo!

ETA2: A short con report with pictures from [ profile] keltcrogue, with a nice pic of Michael and Jennifer at their Q&A.

ETA3: A whole slew of convention pics on Ausxip, with lots of Michael and Jennifer.

If you see more con reports and/or pictures, please link me!

I was watching Prometheus the other day (the Xena episode that crosses over with Hercules) and I haven't made any screencaps yet, but

I had fun watching it anyway. )

The angsty moment I'm talking about is of course the one where Gabrielle and Iolaus are waiting in the cave and the torch starts burning again, which, to them, would mean that either Xena or Hercules has just died to free Prometheus.

The writers over at the Iolausian Library had a challenge to write this missing scene, ages ago: I like Melisande's version, which hits all of my angst and h/c needs very nicely. *g*

Very quickly, as I really really have to go sleep:

[ profile] muccamukk has a great post about one of my all-time favorite Hercules stories: Home Is Where the Heart Is by [ profile] ltlj and Kimberly Rector.

In my mind, this story supersedes most of the actual onscreen fifth season of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, and I know I'm not the only one.

I've updated my site with new screencaps for the fifth season Hercules: the Legendary Journeys episodes Let There Be Light and Redemption.

I got a request for screencaps of the first episode, and then I had to do 'Redemption' as well so I could get to the hug at the end. I hadn't seen the bit with Dahak-in-Hercules'-shape torturing/seducing Iolaus for a long time, and it just gutted me.

Okay, so I reported on the Deep Discount DVD 2-for-1 offer on Hercules DVD sets (seriously, nine bucks for a whole season, including extras. That I paid fifty for, back in the day! Plus shipping! In the snow!), and [ profile] gryphonrhi asked:

"If I were buying one or two seasons of Hercules for an introduction to the fandom, which ones would you recommend?"

Oh, good question. Because I am likely to wax enthusiastic on this topic, I give you the short answer first: you can't go wrong with Season 1, 2 or 3, and you don't have to start at 1. If you want a shortcut to the fabulousness of the Widow Twanky and the cracktasticness of Porkules, start at season 4 instead.

DeepDiscountDVD is holding a 'Buy 1 get 1 free' sale on DVD boxsets.

The DVD sets in the sale include Hercules: the Legendary Journeys season sets (at $17.99 each), Xena season sets ($29.99 each) and Highlander season sets ($29.99 each). Buy two, get the cheapest one free.

This sounds like a good deal if you've been waiting to buy these. I've bought DVDs from DeepDiscount before; their shipping is rather slow, but they replaced a set of mine that got lost at no charge, and their shipping charges to Europe are very reasonable. (Shipping to the US is free, you jammy bastards.)

Please note that the first season of Hercules isn't included in the sale, but they have it at a regular price of $11.99.

[ profile] devinharris watched my Holding Out For A Hero vid and asked,

Which episode did the clip of Herc on his knees, with his hands tied behind
him, come from? I want an icon of that pose, because guh is it hot, but I'm
currently connecting to the 'net at 19.2 kbps and there's no way I can
browse all your screen caps to see if you have that shot capped already.
It's from Hercules and the Amazon Women, that fabulously deranged episode where the Amazons strip Hercules half naked, bind and gag him and then drag him through town on a cart to deliver him to their Queen. Clearly they know a good thing when they see one. (There are several clips from that episode in the vid, because how could there not be? And I didn't even include the one where Hercules is lying on the floor naked.)

Oddly, even though I have tons of screencaps for the episode, I failed to cap the falling-to-his-knees moment. So I had another try, and here are three caps of Bound!Gagged!Defiant!Hercules, especially for [ profile] devinharris, who patiently waited for months until I remembered. *g*

Oh, and this episode inspired The Price, an Iolaus/Ares story by Valentin which is hot like a very hot thing and manages to fix a plot problem at the same time. An old favorite that still holds up.

Someone running a website for Jacinda Barrett asked me to make a few screencaps of the Hercules: the Legendary Journeys episode 'Medea Culpa', and of Medea in particular. (This is one of the flashback to Young Hercules episodes, and Barrett, a young Australian actress, plays Medea.)

So I did. Except when I say a few, I mean fourteen pages. Oops.

But young Hercules, Iolaus and Jason are really very cute together, and I like the framing scenes with grown-up Hercules, Iolaus and Jason fishing together and teasing each other.

A few screencaps and comments )

The rest of the screencaps for this episode are here.

[ profile] cyloran and [ profile] mickeymvt are brightening my friends list with lovely Hercules: the Legendary Journeys stories, thoughts and discussion, and [ profile] swiss_kun is writing excellent angsty snippets for the GoldApple list. It's been a bit quiet for a while, and now it feels like the fandom is growing again.

Because of this, and because I'm throwing clips at a timeline for an old Herc vid, I'm really in a "Hercules! Yay!" mood. Finding clips for a vid can be a lot of fun, especially when the focus is on the main characters, because there is just so much.

Hurt/comfort scenes? Spoilt for choice, not even counting any actual death scenes. Loving looks and significant glances? Snarky exchanges and eye-rolling? Any time. Wild, acrobatic fight scenes? Pick a number.

And then there's time travel. Alternate universes. Torture. Sword duels. Pie eating contests. People turning into pigs. Pigs turning into people. Goddesses surfing on the half-shell. Eight-armed monsters. Giants married to eight-armed monsters. Cute little green baby monsters. People in wigs talking in outrageous French accents. The lost city of Atlantis. Ancient airplanes. Staff weapons that spit lightning. Gods that throw lightning. Gorgeous guys in leather. Gorgeous women in leather. Gods in leather. Talking dragons. Little girls that change into hydras. Spider women. Pirates. Female pirates. Ghosts. Skeleton armies. Amazons. Sand sharks. Master thieves. Cursed treasures. Secret underground kingdoms. Lotus eaters. Vampires. High-speed mummies. Amnesia. Precognition. Telekinesis. Doppelgängers. Cave-ins. Shipwrecks. Bar fights. Pantomime dames. Guys in drag. Chorus girls. Kung-fu masters. Female kung-fu masters. Kittens. Robots. Giant sea snakes that eat people. Mermaids. Mermen. Half-naked wrestling. Mud wrestling. Mud baths. Hunting tricks. Volcanoes. Human sacrifice. Demons. Angels. Exorcism. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the Twilight of the Gods, and the Revenge of the Titans.

All this, and Hercules and Iolaus.

Life is good.

Gah. This is driving me nuts.

In a Hercules: the Legendary Journeys episode, Hercules has a fight with a bunch of pirate-like guys who have a beach-ship - it's got sails and wheels and they do manoeuvres with it on the beach, with Hercules trying to slow them down by hanging on ropes and things. I remember a shot where Hercules is standing there looking heroic and they wheel around him.

(Yeah, you guessed it, I'm vidding again. *g*)

Can someone point me to the right episode? ETA: found, thanks to the eagle-eyed [ profile] mabiana and [ profile] ltlj!

And a return offer: if you would like screencaps of a HtLJ episode or scene I haven't done yet, comment below and I'll gladly make them for you. You can be as specific as you like.
